Geocaching in the Greenway

On August 12th, Hayden was in town to visit his grandparents. He wanted to show me his new GPS so we went geocaching in the Grand Forks Greenway down by Riverside Park. Netinator who is a geocacher from Tennessee left Hayden a Garmin Geko 201 GPS near his cache in Langdon as a present. Netinator and Fargnot were in North Dakota to complete the Delorme Challenge. The Delorme Challenge is to find a geocache on each page of the Delorme Atlas. That's about 54 pages for North Dakota.

Hayden goes by "MX Racer 216" as his handle. It was a very nice gift and Hayden is very excited to have it.

Conducting the search.

I found it.

Signing the log.

If you look at middle of this picture of Riverside Dam you can see a snowmobile that went into the water this winter. The driver was lucky and was rescued by an off duty cop and some other bystanders who just happened to be walking a dog. It's stuck pretty good. Hayden took one look and figured it was a Polaris.

Geocaching in the Greenway

Last weekend I took some of the nephew's geocaching in the Greenway. Of course Hayden quickly found the one we were looking for.

MX Racer 216 putting back the cache.

Hurry Up!

Another easy find for MX Racer 216.

You sure could smell the clover.

Up and over the dike.

Reese and Hayden visit Grandpa

Reese and Hayden were visiting Grandpa John this past weekend.

Playing at the sink.

With Grandpa John.

Grand Forks Central Class of 1979

I had my 30 year high school reunion this past weekend. Wasn't sure that I was going to go, but decided at the last minute to do so. Glad I did. Got to talk to classmates that go back to grade school at Roosevelt.

Some people don't change. For some people, that is a good thing but for others it is a sad thing. None of my friends had changed much and that is a good thing. They were nice then and they are nice now.

Me and Peter G. We go back to Roosevelt Grade School.

Peter and Doug K (who also goes back to Roosevelt).

North Dakota Chautauqua 2009

On Saturday July 25th Dad presented at a Chautauqua event at the Myra Museum. He gave a talk about North Dakota and the Homestead Act. It was interesting as always. He's been doing this since the 1970's. I have great memories of running around the state with him in the 70's setting up the tent and getting to watch all the performers. They got rid of the tent and now perform the shows mostly inside.

My sisters and nephew had the same idea as me and I ran into them at the event. Of course it was time for a group photo.

After the Boil (July 18th)

After feasting on the crawfish the boys did a bit of water skiing.

Almost caught the wipe out.

Jo did a bit of fishing.

And she did some reading.

Crawfish Boil (July 18th)

Neighbor Aaron is getting married and he had a bachelor party. His brother Mike ordered 40lbs of crawfish from Louisiana Crawfish Company and had a Cajun crawfish boil. The pot is a 16 gallon stainless steal keg with a opening cut it the top. It makes for a good cheap boiling pot. I'll have to add that to my wish list.

40 lbs of live crawfish delivered right to your door!!

Here they are after they were dumped out of the bag.

The guests.

Into the pot!

Looking yummy?

Jo made sure to have some dessert for the boys.

All cooked and ready to eat.

Blue plate special.

After boiling they dumped it into a cooler to drain the water.

John's picking off the claw on this giant crawfish.

Yes I did eat some. Not much meat after you peel the tail. Last time I had some they were peeled and precooked.

Down in the Brainerd area (July 16 and 17th)

We spent a couple of days in the Brainerd/Baxter area.

Don't I look just thrilled! We ate at Poncho and Lefty's. It was OK.

Here's Paul's girlfriend.

Mean Looking Clouds! (July 14th)

Had some mean looking clouds on the 14th. Went down to the dock to watch them blow over.

This was one big low cloud.
